Hello World!

I am starting to blog. Partially not in free will. Since I am starting my graduation soon (feb. 2011) I was thinking about a subject, which would fit in my line of interest.

When thinking about a subject, I was thinking: `what the heck are we doing online?`. Since the time some smart people created the Internet, and was public, we humans, have been on the Internet. In the beginning it was pure luxury when a company had a website. If you want to read more on this subject, “How was the Internet created”, read it here, since this isn’t the real subject what I wanted to talk about.

The starting purpose of the Internet was to share documents, but it evolved into keeping contact with your friends, family and random people who live far, far away (but fair enough, also with your neighbor). We now live in the “social network era”, where the communities grows (Facebook has 500 million users world wide) and even more smaller communities are created (photograpybb.com for example). This is also the era where the consumer, the “normal people”, can say what they need and the companies will create/fulfill this demands or needs. This is also the era, where “we” say if a product is good or not; we can build or destroy a product. Well, sort of. Because companies aren’t still used to this fact. Most companies are still focused on their products instead of shifting the focus to the consumer.

But let’s stop right here. What was I thinking again? Because (almost) everyone is on the Internet nowadays (88% in The Netherlands has access to the Internet - source: internetworldstats.com) and 2,764,660 people in The Netherlands has a Facebook profile (source: internetworldstats.com).

Now my thinking about this facts comes around the corner. What if someone dies… What will happen with his or her Facebook profile. What if you want to delete your profile? It still exists. Your name is used by many friends when they tagged you on their photo. So, even if you really want, you still exist on the Internet. Basically, when you put your name on the Internet, even once, you will be immortal. Now, you say, if I won’t ever use the Internet (it is possible) I won’t have this problem. Well… Then you must have no friends in the “normal” world either. Because friends or your company which you work for, will talk about you.

Intrigued by this subject, the idea of having an immortal life on the Internet, my partner in this quest and yours truly, will investigate this ideas. That is why I created this blog. To keep track of my ideas and to share them with you. Since I am Dutch, my English won’t be perfect all the time, so therefor I apologize. But nevertheless, share your thoughts and ideas too in the comments.

I will keep track of our progress of our investigation about this project, so come back now and then. The real deal starts around February 2011, so the fireworks will start at that time.
